The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday said the National Assembly was focusing on 11 bills that would bring the country out of current economic recession. Saraki made this known in Abuja at the 22nd Nigerian Economic Summit: National Assembly Business Roundtable on Ensuring a Legislative Framework for Made-in-Nigeria. He said that the assembly was committed to pushing the bills to ensure that they transformed the country’s economy, adding that the legislature was also pro-business and pro-private sector. He said that key bills the senate was taking seriously to see passed into law within one year were procurement, transportation, Petroleum Industry Bill, among others. He said that the PIB was delayed due to the unrest in the Niger Delta. He said, “We are treating the issue of the economy with urgency and in Procurement Act Amendment, we have made provision to protect the interest of Made-in-Nigeria.” Saraki added that the NASSBER was a...

Judges’ arrest: Caution security agencies, Senate tells Buhari

The Senate on Tuesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to call all security agencies to order and direct the full observance of the rule of law in the discharge of their duties. The call came after deliberation of a motion by Sen. Joshua Lidani (Gombe South) condemning the action of the Department of State Service in the arrest of some judges across the country last weekend. The DSS operatives had on Saturday arrested Justice John Okoro and Justice Sylvester Nguta, both of the Supreme Court; former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Innocent Umezulike; Justice Namdi Dimgba and Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja. Others were Justice Kabiru Auta from Kano judiciary and Muazu Pindiga of Federal High Court, Gombe. The judges were released on bail late Sunday on self-recognition. In the motion, Lidani prayed the senate to summon the Director of the DSS, Lawal Daura, to brief it on the issue. This call failed as the lawmakers voted ...

But in a swift reaction, the state’s Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Banji Okunomo, said Jegede was not a stooge to anybody. The APC candidate alleged that Jegede was incompetent and inexperienced. The statement said, “It is unthinkable that an unprepared, untrai...

Obasanjo is happy I exposed Dogara – Jibrin

Abdulmumin Jibrin The former Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, tells JOHN ALECHENU how lawmakers commit budget fraud, the reason he is tackling principal officers of the House and his relationship with Speaker Yakubu Dogara and Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila S ome have claimed that your anti-corruption crusade against the House of Representatives is an attempt by you to settle a score with Speaker Yakubu Dogara, who used to be your ally. Is that correct? If it was a quarrel that had led to the exposures of the monumental ills going on in the House of Representatives – theft of our collective wealth; abuse of office and trust; and massive budget fraud – then, Nigerians should pray even harder for this kind of personal fights to happen d...

[UPDATED] Senate extends JAMB result’s validity, scraps post-UTME

The Senate on Thursday extended the validity of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board from one year to three years. It also scrapped the conduct of post-UTME examinations by higher institutions for admission purposes. If President Muhammadu Buhari assents to the bill and it becomes law, candidates with old results will, henceforth, be given preference over new UTME candidates in subsequent admission processes by tertiary institutions. The validity extension and post-UTME scrapping were parts of the amendments made to the law establishing JAMB. The Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, which presented its report on “A Bill for An Act to Amend the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Act and for Other Matters Connected Thereof, 2016 SB.245” to the chamber during Thursday’s plenary, said the purpose of the bill was to amend the JAMB Act to increase the validity period of J...

Chelsea have signed a club record kit deal with Nike that is reported to be worth £60 million ($73 million, 66 million euros) per season to the Premier League club. The Blues have been in talks with American sportswear giants Nike since May, when it was confirmed Chelsea were ending their partnership with adidas six years early at the end of June 2017. That deal with the German firm was said to be worth £30 million annually, but it will be dwarfed by the Nike agreement, which is understood to see the company make the full kit for Chelsea’s first-team, academy sides and ladies’ squad for the next 15 years. Chelsea will earn an estimated £900 million by the time the deal, which starts from next season, expires in 2032. Manchester United, the Premier League club with the most visible global profile, have a 10-year deal with adidas, which started for the 2015-16 season and is worth a total of £750 million. Spanish champions Barcelona are said to receive...
